POLISHING SERVICE

The Polishing Service brings the original shine and brilliance back to your Cartier timepiece. Cartier recommends you not to have this service carried out more than eight times during lifetime of a watch made of yellow gold. Polishing requires that the movement be uncased, so polishing is includes a Maintenance or Complete Service.

Performed by a Cartier Specialist Polisher, the Polishing Service includes the following:

  • Case and the bracelet are disassembled
  • Movement and related parts are removed from the case
  • Surfaces of the case, case back, clasp and bracelet are reworked in three stages:
    1. felting: superficial scratches are removed using a very hard brush and a very abrasive paste; it should be noted however that certain deep scratches cannot be removed;
    2. polishing: the surface is given a smooth finish using a hard brush and an abrasive paste;
    3. shining: the final shine is given using a soft brush and a fine paste;
  • Ultrasonic cleaning for case and the bracelet
  • Reassembly of different parts of watch

RHODIUM PLATING SERVICE

The Rhodium Plating Service restores a white gold Cartier watch to its initial shine, whiteness and brilliance. These qualities are initially reinforced by adding a thin layer of rhodium, but this protection deteriorates over time and needs to be refurbished. Cartier recommends that the rhodium plating service not be carried out more than four times in a watch’s lifetime, since a thin layer of metal is removed each time. Rhodium plating is systematically accompanied by a Maintenance or Complete Service because it requires that different watch parts be separated from each other.

Performed by a Cartier Specialist Craftsman, Rhodium Plating includes the following:

  • Case is separated from the bracelet
  • Covement, dial, hands ensemble is separated from the case
  • Layer of rhodium is removed from each part using brushes and abrasive pastes, so as to obtain a naked surface to which the new layer can be applied. This is the longest and most delicate phase, as the parts must be made to look brand new without altering their original shape
  • Surfaces of each part are reworked in three stages:
    1. felting: superficial scratches are removed using a very hard brush and a very abrasive paste; it should be noted however that certain deep scratches cannot be removed
    2. polishing: the surface is given a smooth finish using a hard brush and an abrasive paste
    3. shining: the final shine is given using a soft brush and a fine paste
  • Case and the bracelet are subjected to ultrasonic cleaning
  • Rhodium bath is prepared to deposit a thin layer of rhodium on the surface of each part
  • Different parts of the watch are reassembled
