Matheu’s makes time for quality
Interview with Scott Matheu, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: In 1990 I had to turn to a new career due to health reasons. My father, a certified master watchmaker, asked me to go to watch making school and come to work for him. In 1992, I graduated watch making school and started working for my father. I was an apprentice for three years before he turned over the business to me. At that time we were just a small repair business. I saw a need for new watches in the store when customers would come in with broken watches, so I sold my 1968 Camaro and bought my first watch line. Seven years later I moved the store to Highlands Ranch. We were the first watch store of its kind in Highlands Ranch and we slowly added different watch lines one at a time and built a great reputation for service and sales. We now have four certified watchmakers on-site and the largest repair center in the state, as well as one of the largest selection of watches around, with a second location in Breckenridge.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We have one of the largest watch repair centers in the state of Colorado. We are factory authorized for more than 18 different manufactures, and service all major brands. Our watch makers go back east for factory training every year to stay on top of industry technology. We use the latest equipment to insure the best possible service to maintain your time piece, and our repairs come with a two-year warranty. We strive for greatness and believe in the lost art of customer service. We want our customers to feel special and appreciated, and to let them know how much we appreciate their business. Also, we will be here to service their time pieces for many years to come. We also have the largest watch selection in the state. We carry more than our competition and our service center is second to none.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: The passion our customers have when it comes to their watches, and knowing that when we receive a watch that no one else has been able to repair, and we fix that watch and make that customer so happy, they tell 20 people or more – building that reputation just makes you feel so good inside, and that feeling is passed on to all my employees as well. I love my job, and I make my father so proud of me. That’s what gets me out of bed every day. I have the best job in the world.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Overcoming objections by the consumer. To help them understand that it is not good to buy watches on the Internet, that we are very competitive with other authorized retailers and that it is not always about the bottom line or who is the cheapest. It is about supporting your local business and giving back to the community – we support local jobs, our tax dollars go to the local schools and parks and infrastructure. Small businesses are what make the world go round. One thing my father always said, is someone will always sell it for less but the one thing they will never beat is our service and passion for what we do. And it does help that we have one of the lowest tax rates in town.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: That you can never wind a watch or clock too tight. That is a myth more than 100 years old. We have more than 85 years of watch making experience on staff, we can replace your battery and reseal and vacuum pressure test your watch to factory standards within 24 hours. We are also the factory service center for Swiss Army for the surrounding six states, for warranty work or otherwise. My father was the first man in the state of Colorado to leave the jeweler business and open a watch repair store. How friendly and knowledgeable we are at Matheu’s. How great of a selection of watches we have.
