The Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition | Highland Ranch, CO

Oris, is a well-known Swiss watch brand that specializes in vintage-inspired watches with innovative and extraordinary complications. Dubbed an underdog Swiss watchmaking brand, Oris also chooses to focus their special edition watches on underdogs also. Such as the Swiss air rescue service, or a remote Pacific Island.  All of this underlines their company philosophy which is, “Real Watches for Real People”.

One of the most successful limited-edition pieces by Oris is the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition timepiece. Paying tribute to a true underdog hero, Carl Brashnear, a late US Navy diver. He broke the color barrier, and, later, he received a horrific injury that required amputation, becoming the Navy’s first African-American and then amputee Master Driver.  When originally released, it sold out of it’s 2,000 limited pieces rather quickly.  Now, Oris, releases the follow-up tribute piece, the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition.

This new timepiece has very similar qualities to the first version, given that it is based on the Divers Sixty-Five. However, there is also a very profound difference, this is a chronograph.  This is the very first time that the Divers Sixty-Five family has received a chronograph piece.  With two registers, the left runs seconds and the right is a 30-minute totalizer.  Of course, the sweep hand tracks elapsed seconds. This is not an unfamiliar layout, as can be seen on many other vintage chronographs. However, with the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition, it appears fresh on the Divers Sixty-Five dail. The watch sports gold-plated hands, and the hours and minutes are filled with SuperLuminova.  A self-winding Sellita 510 movement drives the timepiece.

With triangle hour markings and minimal text, the dial is an exceptionally attractive display. The markers and hands are designed in a beige hue for a hint of faux-tina without being to coercive. It is defined well against the matte blue of the dial. Oris states that the blue is the same as the first Carl Brashear edition, however, the appearance seems to appear to be just a smidgen ligher than its predecessor. Regardless, it is a remarkable dial.

The Limited Edition Carl Brashear Chronograph just like its predecessor also makes use of bronze, which is fitting for a timepiece that pays tribute to a hero who made his living wearing a heavy dive helmet that was composed of the same material.  With a visually interesting backdrop, the engraved hashes and numerals for the dive bezel stands out.  The 43mm case is solid cast bronze as well as the crown and chronograph push pieces.

With water resistance up to 100 meters you can take this chronograph for a swim or a dive. The only piece to the watch that is not bronze is the solid screw-in caseback. For hypoallergenic purposes, the caseback is composed of stainless steel. The caseback is also engraved with a dive helmet, the very same type that Carl Brashear would have worn in the Navy, and a saying attributed to the hero, “It’s not a sin to get knocked down. It’s a sin to stay down.” No truer words than this, from a true underdog hero who overcame great odds, and one that is worthy of Oris’s tribute.
