Watch Repair in Highlands Ranch, CO – Rolex

If you are not an avid watch collector or do not know much about watches to begin with, one name will most likely first come to your mind, Rolex. Why is that? How did Rolex become so engrained in our culture?

Rolex is one of the most well-known and powerful watchmakers in the world. Their timepieces always rank in the top of the list for timepieces across the world. Rolex like many watch makers do not actually release their sales numbers each year, but experts agree that they probably roughly make around one million watches every year. But, how did Rolex become the most well-known watch maker in the world?

According to Ben Clymer, the founder and executive editor of the watch enthusiast website Hodinkee, Rolex built their brand on the back of innovation, superior quality, and celebrity endorsement. However, as Clymer stated, innovation in the watch making industry is what truly propelled Rolex to where they are now.

Rolex was the first watch making company to first introduce a waterproof case, the first self-winding watch, and the first watch with a date and one of the first driving chronographs, last of which is arguable. Before watches became a luxury item as they are in today’s society, they were tools. The innovations by Rolex helped made watches even more usable for people.

A self-winding mechanism enabled the watch wearer to avoid having to remember to wind their watch every night. A waterproof case allowed for divers to take a watch with them when they dived, and a driving chronograph allowed race car drivers to be able to time their laps with exact precision. All of these innovations made it much easier to wear the watch every day.

Yet, even before all of the innovations that Rolex has provided to the watch making industry, the first half of the 1900s, Rolex developed its reputation based upon reliability. In order for all of these innovations to function, and for the timepieces to work as intended they needed to be the best at what they do. It is important to keep in mind that watches back then were not considered luxury items as they are viewed today. They were much needed tools for anyone that needed to keep time for many reasons.

Back in the hay day, if you were a diver in the Navy and you needed a timepiece that you could count on lasting forever and would be able to survive 100 meter depths, well, you bought a Rolex.

Lastly, reliability and innovations do no good unless your potential customers know you even exist. In 1927, Mercedes Gleitze, the first woman to ever swim the English Channel and the first person to ever swim the Strait of GIlbraltar was approached by Wilsdort and asked her to wear the new Rolex Oyster watch which was complete with a waterproof case. She agreed and wore it around her neck during an attempt to swim the channel.

At the time, this woman was being photographed daily and was on the front page of every newspaper every day in every city and she was wearing a Rolex around her neck.  Even though she did not actually complete the swim on that attempt, Gleitze’s celebrity status catapulted the Rolex name into the public domain due to its ability to keep track of time while being submerged in cold water for hours at a time and so began a dramatic increase in brand awareness and the public’s opinion for the quality of Rolex.

Now of course, Rolex is synonymous with luxury, since watches are more so luxury items rather than much needed tools today. All of which can be accredited with the fact of the brands past innovations, durability, and celebrity endorsement that allowed for it to pushed in the forefront of society as the King of watches.
