The Babylonians used a sexagesimal system for mathematics and astronomy. This system turned out to be much more useful than other systems in order to avoid complicated notations during different parts of the day. The same system is also what is used in hours in the day, which is where the day and night is divided in 12 subdivisions. You see, twelve is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 6, and itself. Ten only has 3 divisors of 2, 5 and itself. Since there are almost 24 hours in a day, the sexagesimal system just made much more sense to use and that is why it became widespread and still is what we use today to count time.
