Watch Repair in Highlands Ranch, CO – Timeless

Have you ever wondered why there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour?  Of course, most of us remember learning in science class that it takes the Earth almost 24 hours, 23 hours and 56 minutes to be exact, to rotate once around its axis and this is how we have the amount of hours in one day. However, why 60 seconds and 60 minutes for that matter? Why couldn’t we just use something such as 100 seconds equates to 1 minute and 100 minutes to 1 hour?

In order to answer this question, we have to go back in time; over 5,000 years as a matter of fact.  Today’s division of minutes and seconds can be traced back to the Sumerians in early 3500 BC.   Their division of time was adopted by the Babylonians and thru them the majority of the world and there you go.

The Babylonians used a sexagesimal system for mathematics and astronomy. This system turned out to be much more useful than other systems in order to avoid complicated notations during different parts of the day.  The same system is also what is used in hours in the day, which is where the day and night is divided in 12 subdivisions. You see, twelve is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 6, and itself. Ten only has 3 divisors of 2, 5 and itself. Since there are almost 24 hours in a day, the sexagesimal system just made much more sense to use and that is why it became widespread and still is what we use today to count time.

The Babylonians may be long gone, but their system for telling time lives on today. This ingenuitive process led to complex machinery that brought about clock towers throughout the western world beginning in the mid 1300’s at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy to Big Ben in London. From sun dials, to pocket watches, to iPhones.
